Our Western North Carolina community has been devastated by Hurricane Helene. Many small businesses are concerned about how to begin the recovery process. In an effort to make information available to as many people as possible, we wanted to share insight we have available to us. The NC Secretary of State suggests Mountain BizWorks’ Resource Hub as a great starting point for local businesses to find an Assistance Guide, how to register with FEMA, apply to the WNC Strong: Helene Business Recovery Fund & even speak with a business counselor.
WNC Strong: Helene Business Recovery Fund has been established with $7.5 million in initial funding from the Golden Leaf Foundation. Applications are now open for this funding available to aid small businesses rebuild after this unprecedented disaster. Businesses may apply for loans up to $100,000 to meet immediate needs & bridge longer-term relief resources from FEMA, SBA disaster loans, insurance, or other sources. The loans will have 1% interest rate & interest-only payments for 12 months. If not repaid in the first year, the loans will automatically convert to a term loan. The federal government has also made loans available through the Small Business Administration. The WNC Strong: Helene Business Recovery Fund complements the SBA by providing a bridge until businesses can access funding from SBA or other longer term relief programs.
Finally, we note that not all communities in Western North Carolina have been affected. This is the prime tourist season in the mountains. If you’re planning a trip to see the leaves and enjoy the great fall North Carolina weather, the following communities are open for business: Brevard, Hendersonville, Tryon, Saluda, Boone, Blowing Rock, Cullowhee, Sylva, Bryson City, Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Weaverville, Highlands, Sapphire, Cashiers, Cherokee, Dillsboro, Fontana, Robbinsville, Nantahala, Scaly Mountain, Franklin, Murphy, Andrews, and Hayesville.
